Massimo Campailla is a member of the Bologna Bar Association and qualified to represent Clients before the Italian Supreme Court.

He has been a partner of Zunarelli – Studio Legale Associato since 1995 and has been national Managing Partner of the Firm since January 2013.

He has extensive experience in maritime and transport law, international trade law, corporate, administrative and customs law. He advises port authorities, port enterprises, terminal operators, airport management companies and airports. He also advises and represents major insurance companies (in all complex insurance areas), ship-owners, carriers, port operators, freight-forwarders and logistics companies, as well as public institutions and public controlled companies.

He is an active member of several associations. He is the Emilia Romagna territorial representative of Associazione Studi Legali Associati (ASLA). He is a member of Associazione Italiana Diritto Marittimo (AIDIM).

He has been associate professor at the Law Department of the University of Ferrara since 2018, where he teaches logistics and transport law (seat of Ferrara) and European transport law (seat of Rovigo). Previously, since 2001, he was associate professor of transport law at the Faculty of Economics of G. D’Annunzio University of Chieti – Pescara. He is a member of the steering committee of the scientific review “Il Diritto Marittimo” and of the board of directors of the publishing company with the same name. He is a member of the editorial board of “Rivista del Diritto della Navigazione”.

He is the Vice Chairman of Fondazione della Cassa di Risparmio di Trieste and has been a member of its board since 2000. He has been a member of the Board of Fondazione Cacciaburlo since 2016. In the past he served two mandates as member of the Board of Mediocredito del Friuli Venezia Giulia Banca S.p.a..

Notable Cases

  1. Customs Law – Consultancy on the special regime of the Free Port of Trieste
    He is currently providing consultancy services aimed at verifying the effective implementation of the special rules governing the Free Port of Trieste and identifying the most suitable ways to optimise the application of these special rules, which partly derogate from the rules of the European Union Customs Code.

  2. Customs Law – Litigation
    Assisting an industrial manufacturing company that has been challenged over the application of anti-dumping duties on the importation of certain goods from China.

  3. Aviation Law – Litigation and arbitration in the field of air transport
    Assisting a leading Italian insurance company in litigation concerning an aircraft accident during take-off resulting in damage to the aircraft.

  4. Shipping contract – Litigation and arbitration concerning the liability of the shipper
    He is assisting an Italian industrial importer in a dispute concerning the recognition of the liability of the shipper who, by deviating from the principal's instructions, caused the delayed delivery of parts of an industrial plant, resulting in damage due to delayed production.

  5. Legislative advice
    He is assisting - and has assisted in the past - a business organisation in the road transport sector in drafting a number of bills concerning the transport of goods by road.
